How many Scottish self storage websites take bookings online?
Counted by StoreBay · Checked
On 14 October 2026 we read the websites of Scottish storage businesses on StoreBay’s list. Of the 188 self storage sites where we could tell, 40 (21%) let a visitor choose a unit and book it online, and 125 of 191 (65%) show a price. This is StoreBay’s count of operators’ websites, not a survey.

The count
Checked 14 October 2026. Scotland only. Each share is of the self storage websites where we could tell the answer; every site left out is listed under “What we left out”.

- Could not tell
- 7 sites for booking and 4 for prices. Counting them all as “no”, or all as “yes”, gives 20.5% to 24.1% for booking and 64.1% to 66.2% for prices.
- Request forms
- 13 sites have a form that presents itself as the booking step, asking for a size, unit or dates, but only sends a message. We do not count these. If we did, the booking share would be 28% (53 of 188).
- Side lines
- We set aside 63 businesses where storage is a side line (removals, haulage, property, farm or office). Counted too, 16.5% would take bookings online (41 of 249) and 54.4% would show a price (137 of 252).
What we left out
A share is only worth quoting if you can see who is not in it. This is every step from the list to the sites that are counted.

How reliable the reading is
AI assistants read the websites against written definitions, and a second reader checked the result.
- First read
- An AI assistant read each website against the definitions below and kept the page and the words it relied on. Nothing was taken from a script’s flag: the flag agreed with our reading on 63% of the sites where it had a value, and it counts words such as “book now” and “check availability” even where they open a message form.
- Second read
- A second AI reader, given only the evidence and the definitions and never the first answers, re-read 84 sites: a random 30, and 59 where the first reader had found a booking route or a request form (five were in both). Before any difference was settled, the two agreed on whether a site takes bookings online for 78 of 81 sites (96%), on the exact answer (yes, request form or no) for 72 of 81 (89%), on prices for 77 of 78 (99%) and on whether self storage is the main business for 78 of 84 (93%). Every difference was settled against the page, not averaged.
- Weak points
- Sites where storage is not clearly the main business, and sites that ask for your details before they show a price (five are “could not tell” for booking). 17 readings are marked as thin evidence.
- Not a sample
- Every website we could read is counted, so there is no sampling margin to print. The agreement figures check the reading; they are not an error bar on the count.
- Limits
- One visit on one day: up to 12 pages a site, plus the booking, price and size pages those linked to. A booking page behind a login or a script may exist that we could not see. We submitted no form, so a “request form” is one that asks for details and sends a message; we have not tested what happens next. Businesses with no website are not in the shares, and some may take bookings only by phone.
Why this is lower than 94.2%
SSA UK’s 2026 report says 94.2% of UK stores offer online booking, as our UK statistics page quotes. The two figures count different things.
SSA UK’s figure is a share of stores. Ours is a share of websites: a site counts only if a visitor can choose a unit and book or reserve it there. Ours covers Scotland only and every readable website on our list, from one-site businesses up, and does not count a request form (counting those gives 28%). We do not say that either figure is wrong.
How we counted
The definitions, the list, and how the sites were read.
- Takes bookings online
- On the operator’s own website, or a booking page it links to that is clearly its own, a visitor can choose a unit or size and book or reserve it without phoning or emailing. Paying at the end is not needed: a reserve-now step counts. A request for a quote, “enquire”, a phone number, a general contact form, “check availability” that only sends a message, and a listing on someone else’s page do not count.
- Shows prices
- The site states a price in pounds for a storage unit or unit size. A price for packing materials or padlocks, a price in a blog post, and “ask for a quote” do not count.
- The list
- StoreBay keeps a list of UK storage businesses, gathered from several sources including Companies House. On 14 October 2026 it held 551 active companies registered in Scotland (the nation comes from the postcode, using the ONS Postcode Directory). A company is counted only if one of its sources is its own website, Companies House or the Overture Maps open dataset.
- The visit
- StoreBayBot (the crawler we describe at /bot) read each site on the day, asked robots.txt first, left two seconds between requests, submitted no form and went round no block. A few sites built with scripts were also opened once in a browser, without clicking or filling anything.
- What we publish
- Counts only. No business is named, listed, mapped or ranked, and nothing here is used to decide whether StoreBay contacts a business. A site that changes after 14 October 2026 is not re-counted.
